Egypt’s chief coroner, Dr. Ihsan Kamil, said the final autopsy report on Essam Atta will be issued on Sunday, 20 November 2011.
Atta’s family and human rights activists claim the 24-year-old man died in Cairo’s Tora prison after being tortured by guards who pushed hoses into his mouth and anus as punishment for smuggling a phone SIM card into his cell.
The prison authority, however, claim Atta died after he swallowed a drug packet smuggled into the prison by his family.
In a statement delivered to Ahram, Dr. Kamil stated that none of the information about the autopsy published in the media during the past few weeks was officially issued by the forensic medical authority.
The autopsy report will be based on results of a blood test to determine cause of death.
Atta was serving a 3 year sentence in prison after military court found him guilty of illegal occupation of an apartment last February.
