Art Alert: Beatles tribute with Glass Onion and Awtar Quartet in Cairo

Ahram Online , Thursday 6 Apr 2017

This is the first time the Glass Onion band will team up with Awtar Quartet

Awtar and Glass Onion

Egyptian Beatles tribute band Glass Onion will hold a concert on Thursday 13 April at the Cairo Opera House, featuring the Awtar Quartet.

Glass Onion was founded in 2010 by four independent musicians and singers who bring the Beatles' hits to Cairo and Alexandria audiences, across many venues.

The band consists of guitarists Kareem Ghalid and Hany Mustafa, bassist Amir Shawky and drummer Magued Nagati.

The Awtar Quartet, founded in December 2012, performs a variety of music genres, from Arabic to easy listening compositions, as well as Western classical music gems.

As part of their dynamic outreach efforts, the Awtar quartet has performed for communities across Cairo, including performances for children, the ill and the underprivileged.

The quartet has also initiated many artistic collaborations.

One of their latest projects was the founding of the Osiris Strong Orchestra in cooperation with the Osiris Arts Centre. The orchestra brings together talented amateur players and gives them an opportunity to develop their performing skills.

The quartet consists of Egyptian musicians Yasser Ghoneim on first violin, Khaled Saleh on second violin, Essam Abdel-Hamid on viola and Mohamed Abdel-Fattah on cello.

Programme:

Thursday 13 April, 8pm
Cairo Opera House, open air theatre, Zamalek, Cairo
