Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi attended on Wednesday a conference at the Army's Galaa Theatre in Cairo where a number of ministers, governors and youth briefed him on the latest in efforts to reclaim state lands over the past few weeks.

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail told El-Sisi that from 16 to 31 May, the state recorded a total of 1.92 million feddans of illegally seized lands.

According to Ismail, over 919,000 feddans have been reclaimed by the state, while 771,000 feddans are being used for agriculture and their occupiers have filed formal requests to purchase them.

During the conference, El-Sisi said removing illegal buildings on islands in the Nile must be priortised, expressing concerns that those buildings lack proper sewage systems.

The president said a solution should be found to aid people who have made their living on the land being reclaimed.

In 2016, Sisi formed a national committee to address transgressions on state land in accordance with Egyptian law.

In May, El-Sisi urged governors, the interior ministry and the armed forces to put an end to such transgressions.

In December, the committee announced that it had restored 80,000 feddans of illegally acquired state land.
