Egyptian parliament member and Wafd Party spokesperson Mohamed Fouad resigned from parliament on Thursday in protest over what he says was MPs opposed to the Tiran and Sanafir deal not being allowed to properly present their viewpoint on the agreement.

Fouad said that his resignation comes in protest of the undermining of his legislative role as a member of the parliament, which is granted to him by the country's constitution.

"The general session [where the vote took place] was managed in a selective way that did not allow opponents of the deal to express their opinion or fairly present their point of view," the MP said in his resignation letter.

Fouad added that he had been repeatedly ignored when he attempted to present for discussion in parliament several issues that “affect the lives of citizens and the state,” even though he had followed all legal requirements for his proposed topics to be discussed in parliament.

Following a series of parliamentary hearings this week, the Egyptian parliament approved on Wednesday a maritime border demarcation deal that places the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir, currently under Egyptian control, in Saudi Arabia's territorial waters.
