Clashes between protesters and security forces have resumed in downtown Cairo on Monday morning.

Protesters in Mohamed Mahmoud Street are trying to reach the Ministry of Interior but security forces are fighting them back with tear gas.

Several have been injured as a result of the latest violence.

An Ahram Online reporter at the scene says the situation in the square itself remains calm but protesters claim security forces are on their way to the square and clashes are likely to resume soon.

There are around one thousand protesters in the square and they’ve hoisted a banner that says “The People Demand a Civil Council,” referring to the long time revolutionary demand that the military council transfer power to a civil authority.  On the banner is a Facebook page for the civil council mimicking the ruling military council’s own Facebook page.

This is the third day of violence after security forces tried to forcibly empty the square of protesters on Saturday.
