Despite setting a new personal and African record, Egyptian swimmer Farida Osman finished 9th in the women's 50m freestyle semifinal at the FINA World Championships in Budapest on Saturday.
Osman missed out on the World Championships 50m freestyle final, timing 24.62 seconds to improve her previous record of 24.78.
Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom set a world record of 23.67 seconds.
Sjostrom’s time in the semi-finals broke the previous mark of 23.73 seconds set by Germany's Britta Steffen in 2009.
Farida has already snatched the first-ever Egyptian swimming medal when she won the women's 50m butterfly bronze medal earlier on Saturday, setting a new personal, national and African record in the process.
The FINA World Championships – or World Aquatics Championships – are the main global competition for aquatic sports (swimming, diving, high-diving, open-water swimming, synchronised swimming, and water polo).
The tournament runs from 14 to 30 July this year.
