Egypt received its second Type-209/1400 submarine from Germany on Tuesday at a ceremony in the German city of Kiel, according to a statement from Egypt's military spokesman.

Commander of the Egyptian Navy Ahmed Khalid, raised the Egyptian flag on the submarine, manufactured by the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

The new submarine, which will officially join the Egyptian naval forces "within days", is a technological addition to Egypt's navy and will further its capability to bolster Egyptian national security, the spokesman said.

The Type-209/1400 has a range of 11,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 21.5 knots. It is equipped with missiles and torpedoes.

The new submarine, S42, is the second of four Type-209 craft ordered from Germany.

The first craft, S41, was handed over in Germany in December, officially joining the Egyptian navy's fleet in April.
