Ahram Online , Tuesday 3 Oct 2017

Egypt has strongly condemned a terrorist bomb blast in Bahrain on Monday that injured several policemen who were guarding a religious procession on the occasion of Ashoura.

In a statement on Tuesday, Egypt's foreign ministry spokesman expressed his condolences for the injured, stressing Egypt's support for Bahrain in combating terrorism and violence of all kinds.

On Monday, the Bahraini interior ministry said five policemen were injured in a terrorist attack while securing an Ashoura procession in Daih on the outskirts of the capital Manama.

Ashoura is an Islamic festival that falls on the 10th day of the Islamic calendar. Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohamed’s grandson Imam Al-Hussein.

Bahrain has a sizeable Shia population.

The Egyptian ministry expressed its confidence that the Bahraini government and people will withstand such incidents and successfully combat the "obnoxious phenomena" of terrorism that seeks to undermine stability.
