Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry cancelled Tuesday's training session "for the safety of fans and players" after thousands of fans showed up at the request of the club, resulting in several injuries.

Supporters of the Cairo giants rushed into Mokhtar El-Titsh Stadium at the club's headquarters in Zamalek to support their team ahead of Saturday's much-anticipated African Champions League clash against Wydad Casablanca away in Morocco.

On Monday, Ahly had invited fans to attend the training session to raise the players' morale before the big game. The club issued the invitation at the request of El-Badry.

Before the training session, the club's executive manager Sherin Shams confirmed that entrance procedures and security preparations were well-planned. However, the club seems to have been surprised by the large number of spectators that turned up.

The stands soon filled up and fans then spread onto the pitch, with several injured due to a stampede.

The attendance of fans at football matches in Egypt has resulted in several disasters since 2012, with several deaths and severe injuries.

Since February 2012, domestic competitions have been held behind closed doors, while attendance at continental games is limited to reduce the risk of problems.

The holders of a record eight trophies, Ahly failed to take a first-leg home advantage over Wydad, despite their territorial dominance, losing the lead to settle for a 1-1 draw last Saturday.

Ahly need to score an away goal to stand a chance of lifting their first Champions League trophy since 2013.
