Egypt's National Elections Authority (NEA) is set to announce at 4pm CLT on Monday the timetable of the country's upcoming presidential elections – expected in the spring of 2018 – and the details of the organisation of the electoral process.

The NEA, which was created by a presidential decree in August 2017, is an independent authority with sole responsibility for supervising general elections and referendums in Egypt.

The 10-member authority is led by the head of the Court of Cassation.

According to the Egyptian constitution, the president of Egypt is elected through a simple majority system.

Election proceedings are to begin no later than 120 days before the end date of the current presidential term on 7 June 2018.  The results are to be announced no later than 30 days before the end of the current presidential term.

The last presidential elections were held in May 2014.

Now-President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi secured 96 percent of the vote over his sole competitor; leftist politician and leader of the Egyptian Popular Current Hamdeen Sabahi.

The current president officially assumed office on 8 June 2014.
