An Egyptian man has reported being robbed and injured by attackers who had posted a fake camera advert on a popular peer-to-peer shopping website to engineer a meeting, days after a student was stabbed to death during a similar robbery.
Islam Hatem, who describes himself as a photographer on his Facebook page, said he was robbed and severely injured when he went to buy a camera lens after seeing ads on the OLX website.
“I saw a camera lens advert on OLX and I went to the place that we agreed to meet in 10 Ramadan city,” he wrote on his Facebook page, where he also published pictures of his injuries.
“I rode with the seller and two other people in a microbus heading to his home to get the lens, as I was told,” Hatem said.
“Minutes later, two other people told the driver to stop the vehicle and they started hitting me with sticks and knives and then robbed me of my camera, my money and other personal items,” he said.
He wrote that he needed 29 stitches to his head and face, and had other injuries to his hands and body.
Hatem, who also studies aviation engineering, said he reported the incident to the police along with a medical report documenting his injuries.
Last week, Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, also an engineering student, was reported missing; his body was later located by police in an abandoned area in Al-Nozha neighbourhood in Cairo.
The victim’s father said that his son had been searching days before for a used laptop online and found one through an advertisement on OLX.
The police arrested two of four people accused of killing Abdel-Aziz and stealing EGP 25,000, the price of the used laptop they agreed upon with the victim.
The suspects confessed to posting a fake laptop ad online to rob the victim.
