An Egyptian teenager who was violently assaulted last month in the UK died on Wednesday, the Nottingham Post website said.

Eighteen-year-old Mariam Moustafa Abdel Salam, a Central College student in the city of Nottingham, was attacked outside a shopping mall by a group of women on February 20 and fell into a coma following the incident.

"She died in Nottingham City Hospital today (Wednesday, March 14)," the news website said.

A 17-year-old female suspect had been arrested by police on suspicion of "assault occasioning grievous bodily harm," but was later released on conditional bail, the website added.

It said a post-mortem examination is set to take place.

"Our investigation is ongoing and extensive enquiries have already been completed," Detective Chief Inspector Mat Healey, of Nottinghamshire Police, was quoted as saying

He urged witnesses of the incident, which took place outside the intu Victoria Centre, or anyone with information that might be of help to investigators to come forward.

Egypt's foreign ministry said late on Wednesday that the Egyptian consulate in London will follow up on legal measures to punish the culprits and hold accountable those who showed negligence in providing necessary medical care to the teenager.

The ministry said it has been in touch with the girl's family and is taking necessary procedures to send her body home.
