In celebration of the Modern Dance Theatre Company’s silver jubilee, Egyptian Culture Minister Ines Abdel-Dayem honored the troupe's Lebanese founder and director Walid Aouni at the Cairo Opera House on 3 April.

The ceremony was held in appreciation for Aouni's extensive artistic career, and his work with the troupe since it was founded 25 years ago.

A choreographer, scenographer and director, Aouni has directed more than 25 shows for the Egyptian Modern Dance Theatre Company, as well as many ceremonies for the ministry of culture and the ministry of armed forces. He has also contributed to various other national celebrations in Egypt.

The director and choreographer expressed his joy at being honored, and thanked everyone who participated in the success of the company over the years, according to Ahram Arabic.

“I will continue to dance, because the world is dancing,” he said.

The celebration began with a documentary about the troupe’s history, highlighting the most important milestones, followed by the re-staging of Icarus, the troupe's debut performance.

The production was first launched in 1993. On Thursday, the troupe performed a new version based on Aouni's vision.

Inspired by the ancient Greek legend, Icarus is a story of hubris.

Trapped with his father Dedalus on the island of Crete as punishment from the god Mineus, they attempt to escape with wings made of wax, but Icarus ignores his father's warning not to fly too close to the sun.

The play will be performed again on 4 April at 8pm in the Main Hall of the Cairo Opera House.
