Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has been cleared to play in the team's next three games after having a red card rescinded by the English Football Association, a spokesman for the FA said on Tuesday.

The Egyptian international received his marching orders in stoppage time of Arsenal's exciting 3-2 victory over Southampton in Sunday's Premier League game.

He received a straight red for appearing to shove out at Cedric Soares as Southampton were about to take a free kick. It was the first time for Elneny to get sent off with Arsenal.

Arsenal's subsequent appeal resulted in the red card being overturned.

"Mohamed Elneny will be available for Arsenal’s next three games after an Independent Regulatory Commission accepted that he was wrongly dismissed for violent conduct against Southampton on Sunday 8 April 2018," the FA spokesman said on Twitter.

The Gunners' coach Arsene Wenger said he was surprised by the referee's decision to send off Elneny.

"He's a fair player, not an aggressive player. Has he touched the player in his face or not? I don't know. If he has done it I think it’s accidental," the Frenchman said after the game.

Elneny, who joined Arsenal from Swiss side Basel in January 2016, has made 29 appearances with the team in all competitions so far this season, scoring once and creating two goals.
