Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Sunday that Mohamed Elneny's injury "doesn't look good" amid Egyptian worries over the key midfielder's World Cup chances.

"Unfortunately it doesn't look too good," Wenger told beIN Sports channel after Arsenal crushed West Ham 4-1 in the Premier League on Sunday. 

"He has an X-ray, but I don't know how bad it is. But it doesn't look too good."

Elneny was carried off on a stretcher after falling awkwardly on his ankle following an aerial challenge with Mark Noble on the stroke of halftime during Arsenal's win over West Ham.

The 26-year-old left the pitch in tears and obvious pain, little less than two months before Egypt make their first World Cup appearance since 1990. 

The former Basel midfielder is a key member of Egypt's squad. He played a vital role in helping the team reach the African Cup of Nations final in early 2017, scoring in the 2-1 defeat by eventual champions Cameroon.

He was also ever-present in Egypt's World Cup qualifying campaign as the Pharaohs topped their group to end a 28-year wait for an appearance in the football's most prestigious showpiece.
