Cairo giants Ahly were eliminated from the Egypt Cup’s quarter-finals on Monday after a stunning 1-0 defeat by Assyouti at El-Salam stadium in Cairo.
Substitute striker Omar Kamal Abdel-Wahed scored the winner in the 64th minute, helping his side secure a historic place in the competition's final four.
Assyouti will face the winner of Smouha and Wadi Degla's clash, scheduled for 8 May, in the semis.
Despite their dominance in the first half in terms of possession, defending champions Ahly failed to pose a real threat; their first attempt came nine minutes before the break when midfielder Eslam Moharab's close-range shot was easily contained by Assyouti's keeper.
One minute later, highly rated striker Salah Mohsen was close to opening the scoring for Ahly, but his header went wide.
Ahly had a penalty claim in the last minute of the first half when the ball touched the hand of Assyouti midfielder Mohanad Lashine, but the referee refused their calls.
The Egyptian champions tried to intensify their attack in the second half but failed to convert their possession to real opportunities.
Against the run of the game, Omar Dunga benefited from Eslam Mohareb's missed pass in the heart of Ahly's midfield to send a nice pass to Abdel-Wahed, allowing him to score easily from a close range.
After the goal, Ahly struggled against a defensive-minded side that were determined to safeguard their lead.
