Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers will take charge of Egypt's opening World Cup clash against Uruguay on Friday, world governing body FIFA announced on Wednesday.

Kuipers took part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and also officiated at Euro 2016.

He presided over two Europa League finals in 2013 and 2018 and officiated at the final of the lucrative European Champions League in 2014, which was won by Real Madrid following a 4-1 victory over city rivals Atletico.

Egypt kick off their Group A campaign against Uruguay before facing hosts Russia on 19 June and Arab Gulf side Saudi Arabia on 25 June.

They are making their first World Cup appearance since 1990, when they exited the tournament at the first round.
