Egyptian court issues preliminary death sentence for 11 Brotherhood members over 2015 killing of 3 policemen

Ahram Online , Thursday 14 Jun 2018

An Egyptian criminal court referred the preliminary death sentences of 11 members of the terrorist-designated Muslim Brotherhood organization to the country's Grand Mufti for his non-binding opinion.

The Sharqiya terrorism district court convicted the defendants of taking part in the killing of three policemen in Sharqiya governorate in 2015.

The referral is a necessary step before the death sentences against the convicted can be finalized, per Egypt's penal code.

The court set 12 July to issue its verdict.

Once the court issues the verdict in the case, the defendants have the right to appeal.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, hundreds of Brotherhood members have been arrested and convicted on charges of murder, inciting murder and violence.
