Ahram Online recounts the highlights of World Cup action on Friday

Day 8

Neymar tears

Brazil forward Neymar broke down and wept uncontrollably on the pitch at the end of his team's hard-fought 2-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday. With mounting pressure on his shoulders, the PSG man struggled to break down a resolute Costa Rica side and was also booked for dissent. However, he was eventually able to open his account as Brazil ran out 2-0 winners with two stoppage-time strikes.

Musa brilliance

Ahmed Musa, who did not start the opening defeat by Croatia, reminded Nigeria's fans of his worth by netting a superb double to revive his side's chances of reaching the knockout stage following a deserved 2-0 win over Iceland. He deftly controlled a lofted pass from wing-back Victor Moses to break the deadlock in the 49th minute and made it 2-0 in the 75th minute when he used his pace to beat Iceland defender Kari Arnason and rounded goalkeeper Hannes Por Halldorsson before slamming the ball into the net.

Injury problems for Germany, England

Germany and England could lose key players in their upcoming World Cup games. Germany central defender Mats Hummels is unlikely to feature in their second Group F game against Sweden on Saturday after hurting his neck in training, while England's Dele Alli is also unlikely to play against Panama in Group G on Sunday due to a thigh injury.

Xhaka scorcher

Granit Xhaka scored one of the goals of the tournament in Switzerland's 2-1 comeback win over Serbia in an exciting Group E clash. He leveled the score in the 52nd minute after unleashing a brilliant swerving shot that left keeper Serbia keeper Vladimir Stojkovic with no chance.
