Tunisia compound Arab misery

Tunisia are virtually out of the World Cup after suffering a humiliating 5-2 defeat by a vibrant Belgium side in their second Group G game, compounding the misery of Arab teams who tasted eight losses between them and have all exited the tournament. Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul said: "We did not disappoint the Arab world, we did not give up on our Arab fans. We have common problems, I don't think we have high quality performance, we need to change our lifestyle because it is not in line with high-level football, we need to change the way we train."

Dramatic win for Germany

Germany looked close to suffering a shock first-round exit when they trailed to a first-half goal from Ola Toivonen against Sweden but they roared back with a remarkable second-half display, leveling the score through Marco Reus before Toni Kroos snatched a dramatic win with a sublime shot from an impossible angle to put the defending champions in a strong position to reach the last 16.

Record number of penalties?

A new record of the number of penalties awarded at a World Cup could be set at the Russia finals. Carlos Vela's penalty in Mexico's match with South Korea on Saturday was the 14th of the tournament in the first 28 games, meaning there has now been a penalty once every two games. In Brazil four years ago, there were only 13 penalties in the entire tournament. The World Cup record, set in 2002, stands at 18.

Hernandez equals Mexican record

Javier Hernandez became Mexico's joint all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, having netted his fourth goal in the football's global showpiece tournament in a 2-1 victory over South Korea, going on level with former striker Luis Hernandez. It was also his 50^th goal for Mexico.
