Egypt has said a peace agreement signed between South Sudan President Salva Kiir and rebels Wednesday is vital move to regain security in a country gripped by civil war since 2013.
"The agreement is a major step on the path of restoring security," Egypt's foreign minister said in a statement Wednesday
The deal, which includes a ceasefire to start in 72 hours, was signed in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, with the aim of ending the civil war in which tens of thousands of people have been killed.
Egypt said it hopes the deal would end "internal division and stop the bloodshed amongst the South Sudanese people," the foreign ministry said.
Cairo pledged to "continue its efforts to support any initiatives that achieve peace, stability and development for the brotherly people of southern Sudan," the statement added.
The country’s civil war started in 2013, less than two years after South Sudan won independence from Sudan.
