European Union starts rule-of-law procedure against Poland

The European Union has opened a rule-of-law procedure against Poland over the country's supreme court law, a move that could eventually see Poland's EU voting rights removed.

The European Commission said in a statement Monday that the measures in the law "undermine the principle of judiciary independence."

Poland has increasingly faced questions over the recent overhaul of its judicial system, which is perceived as out of line with Western democratic standards.

The EU Commission insisted it "stands ready to continue the rule-of-law dialogue" despite starting the legal procedure.

A new law regulating Poland's Supreme Court that would lead to the forced early retirement of nearly 40 percent of its justices is to take effect on Tuesday.
