Ahmed El-Sharkawy, a journalist with local Egyptian newspaper El-Shorouk, died on Tuesday in a car accident near Benha, north of Cairo, El-Shorouk said on its website.

El-Sharkawy, who was in his mid-thirties, had been working with El-Shorouk for six years, and mainly covered judicial affairs and prosecution-related cases.

He was also specialised in writing investigative stories on corruption as well as militant movements and extremists.

El-Sharkawy was on his way back from his sister's wedding in the northern governorate of Kafr El-Sheikh. His wife, who was with him in the car at the time, survived the accident, according to El-Shorouk.

Deadly road accidents are not uncommon in Egypt, and are mostly attributed to human error, inadequate car maintenance and poor road conditions, according to a report published earlier this year by Egypt's official statistics agency CAPMAS.

CAPMAS said in March, however, that the number of car accidents in the country declined by 24.5 percent in 2017 to reach 11,098, down from 14,710 accidents the previous year.
