Egyptian police foiled a suicide bombing attempt on Saturday morning at a church in the town of Mostorod in Qalioubiya governorate, just north of Cairo, state television said.
According to the website of Egyptian state television, an unidentified terrorist, who was wearing an explosive belt, tried to infiltrate into the worshippers gathered at the Virgin Mary Church for a service.
Security around the church prevented him from doing so, however, and he subsequently detonated his explosives on top of Mostorod Bridge, killing himself in the process.
He had been intending to blow himself up to cause the maximum casualties among the churchgoers, state television said.
No further information on casualties has yet been released.
Worshippers at the service were celebrating the annual Fast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which began on 7 August and concludes on 22 August.
