Former Zamalek coach Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam said Sunday that negotiations with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) over the vacant job of assistant coach for the Pharaohs failed, adding he thanks EFA president, Hani Abou Reida, for tipping him for the job.

"Thanks for Abou Reida for his confidence," Mido said on his Twitter account Sunday. "It's a great honor to be part of the Pharaohs technical staff, but unfortunately negotiations have failed."

Earlier this month Javier Aguirre of Mexico was named Egypt's new coach, succeeding Argentinean manager Hector Cuper who had parted company with the national team following their poor 2018 World Cup campaign.

The former Tottenham striker was tipped to be Aguirre's new assistant alongside Deyaa El-Sayed and Hany Ramzy.

Reports suggested that Mido insisted to keep his job as a match analyst on sports channels, but the EFA board rejected Mido's request.

Sources in EFA revealed that El-Sayed and Ramzy are the only contenders for the vacant job.

El-Sayed was a member in Bob Bradley's staff when the American coach took charge of the Pharaohs in 2013, while Ramzy was the coach of the Egyptian Olympic team that participated in the London Olympics in 2012.
