Former Egypt defender Hany Ramzy has been named an assistant to national team coach Javier Aguirre, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Wednesday.
"Ramzy was unanimously chosen by the EFA board members following a vote," EFA member Seif Zaher told reporters.
The 49-year-old was a decorated defender who also played as a central midfielder, earning 125 international caps. He was part of Egypt's squad for the 1990 World Cup and helped them win the 1998 African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso.
Ramzy came through the youth ranks of Cairo's famed club Ahly but spent most of his career playing in Germany for Werder Bremen and Kaiserslautern.
As a manager, he coached Enppi and Wadi Degla in Egypt and Lierse in Belgium. He was also in charge of Egypt's U-23 side at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, helping them reach the quarter finals.
"I'm very happy to work with the players whom I managed at the 2012 Olympic Games. I hope that we also qualify for the 2022 World Cup together," Ramzy told reporters following his appointment.
"Aguirre will arrive in Cairo today and we will meet soon to discuss the plans for the coming period."
Former Mexico boss Aguirre was named Egypt's coach early this month, succeeding Argentinean tactician Hector Cuper whose deal was not renewed after the Pharaohs lost all three games at the summer World Cup in Russia.
