Concrete Poetry in Space, a sculpture exhibition by Egyptian artist Hazem El-Mistikawy, will open in the Sharjah Gallery at the American University in Cairo on 3 October.

The exhibition, which will run for 18 days, is organised by MASR Research for Modern & Contemporary Art.

El Mestikawy's work "explores minimalism, language, craft, architecture, and poetry with ordinary materials like paper and cardboard," the exhibition description reads.

The artist currently has a piece displayed in the Second Sculpture Salon.

His earth-colored sculptures manipulate the relatively fragile mediums of paper and cardboard into robust forms that seem carved rather than built. He creates geometric arrangements that resemble letters forming mysterious sentences, or puzzle pieces that could fit together.

El Mestikawy was previously shortlisted in 2011 for the prestigious Jameel Art Prize, launched by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

His work Patent Pattern earned him the grand prize at the 13th Asia Art Biennale in Bangladesh.

The North Carolina Museum of Art and the Jameel Museum in Dubai have also both acquired artworks by El-Mestikawy.

The exhibition opens on 3 October at 6 pm, and will remain on display until 18 October.
The gallery is open daily from 9am to 4pm, except Fridays and Saturdays.
