The liberal Wafd Party and the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) have both reiterated their commitment to the “Code of Honour” signed in September by 43 parties of the Democratic Alliance electoral coalition and the Salafist Nour Party.
The code constitutes a general agreement on Egypt’s nature as a “modern, civil state,” stipulating that any new constitution be drafted based on this premise. The code is not, however, considered legally binding.
At a meeting Thursday evening, Wafd Party chief El-Sayed El-Badawi and FJP head Mohamed Morsi both stressed the importance of reaching consensus on the criteria upon which members of a committee mandated with drafting a new national charter be selected.
The Wafd Party was briefly a member of the FJP-led Democratic Alliance before withdrawing from the coalition to protest its paltry representation on the alliance’s electoral lists. Nevertheless, the Wafd – along with other parties that subsequently pulled out of the coalition – remains committed to the so-called Code of Honour.
