The Gypsum Museum, a sculpture exhibition by Hany Rashed, will open at Mashrabia Gallery on 25 November.
Rashed, who is an established artist, takes a childlike, light hearted approach to tackling complex issues of daily life. In this exhibition, he presents a sculptural collection of cars to represent the variety of individuals in a society, using gypsum, a material associated with fragility, to depict human beings' mortality and vulnerability.
He "captures the daily over-crowdedness of Egyptian streets, and concurrently portrays his projections of a fate and destiny that now seems inevitable," as noted in the exhibition statement.
Born in Cairo in 1975, Rashed is a self-taught artist who was mentored by renowned artist Mohamed Abla.
He experiments with different techniques, but is known for a distinct style of painting and collage that draws from media imagery to critique excessive exposure to Western media.
His last exhibition was in 2017, titled The Last Farewell, and was an exceptionally personal subject after years of socially-centred artwork, which he brings back in The Gypsum Museum.
Programme:
The film opens on Sunday 25 November at 7 pm, and will run until 10 January
