A police officer was killed on Saturday while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device (IED) that was found in a Cairo slum area, a security source said.
The IED, which was put in a bag, was placed on a building's roof in Ezzbet El-Hagana.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the police officer was a bomb disposal expert at Cairo Security Directorate.
The explosion comes as Egypt has tightened security in the weeks leading up to the Coptic Christmas celebrations on 7 January.
