US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo hailed President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s commitment to promote religious freedom in the region during his visit to Cairo as part of an extensive MENA tour.

“Inspiring to visit the recently inaugurated Cathedral of the Nativity and al-Fattah al-Aleem Mosque. President El-Sisi’s commitment to promoting #religiousfreedom and interfaith tolerance sets an example for the region to follow,” Pompeo tweeted on Thursday.

Pompeo also affirmed during a meeting with El-Sisi on Thursday that his country stands firmly behind Egypt's commitments to protecting religious freedoms and fighting terrorism

His tweet came following his visit to the recently opened Nativity of Christ Cathedral and Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque in the country’s new administrative capital.

The cathedral, which occupies 30 percent of the 4.14-acre site allocated to the cathedral complex and accommodates 8,200 worshippers, is the biggest in the region.

Al-Fattah Al-Alim Mosque, which holds more than 17,000 worshippers, is the largest mosque in the country and one of the largest in the Middle East.
