Wings reserved for the General Egyptian Book Organisation (GEBO) at the Cairo International Book Fair were empty on the first day of the fair, which was inaugurated by Egyptian Minister of Culture Shaker Abdelhamid.
GEBO clerks expressed resentment about the delay, noting that the prominent publishing house had not been granted access to the fairgrounds until Friday afternoon.
Nevertheless, a number of publishers and visitors expressed optimism about the fair, which they described as an important event for the local publishing industry.
