Egypt concludes gathering on minimizing hazardous waste

Ahram Online , Monday 25 Feb 2019

Arab and African countries gathered in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria over the past two days to put forward recommendations on necessary measures to reduce hazardous waste.

Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan among other countries submitted their reports on reducing waste generation and developing strategies and measures to address the risks of waste during a two-day conference, organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Arab States (BCRC).

Representatives discussed during the 23-24 February event the different aspects of guidance for the convention's 187 countries on different elements of the waste management hierarchy including prevention, minimization and reuse.

BCRC head and former environment minister Moustafa Hussein has called on civil society groups and universities to step up efforts to raise awareness of the importance of the 1989 Basel Convention, which regulates trade in poisonous wastes.

He said the event is part of the center's efforts to achieve sustainable development in Egypt and Arab countries.
