Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed women empowerment with President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump during talks in Washington DC on Tuesday.
The two “discussed opportunities to work together to advance President El-Sisi’s proposed agenda with regard to women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship in Egypt and the region, increasing access to credit and job opportunities,” the White House said in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, El-Sisi held talks with Trump who praised him while speaking to reporters ahead of the bilateral meeting.
“He’s doing a great job,” Trump said after he was asked about a possibility for El-Sisi to extend his presidential term in light of proposed constitutional amendments . “I don’t know about the effort. I can just tell you he’s doing a great job.”
Egypt's parliament is scheduled to take a final vote on the proposals next week before they are put to a national referendum.
“The two leaders engaged in a frank discussion on regional developments in Libya and the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood,” the White House said in the statement. “Both leaders expressed their mutual commitment to promoting religious liberty,” the White House added.
Trump said he and El-Sisi were going to talks about “very important” military and trade issues during their meeting.
“We do a lot of work together. We work together. And I think we’ve never had a better relationship — Egypt and the United States — than we do right now,” he told reporters.
El-Sisi too emphasized that the US-Egyptian relations “have not been better over the years of our bilateral relationship.”
This is the second visit by El-Sisi to the US since 2017.
