Egypt’s Sisi pardons prisoners on Sinai Liberation Day

Ahram Online , Thursday 18 Apr 2019

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a decree to pardon a number of prisoners on the occasion of the Sinai Liberation day, which falls on April 25.

The decree, published in the country’s official gazette on Tuesday, instructed the interior ministry to examine the cases of the prisoners to determine those who deserve pardons. A ministry committee has yet to decide on the number of those to be released.

The decree says pardons cannot be grated to those whose release would pose “a threat to national security.”

Some of those pardoned will be granted conditional release under which they will be subject to police supervision for five year.

President El-Sisi issues pardons several times a year, usually on major national holidays and religious festivals.

In January, El-Sisi issued a decree pardoning a number of prisoners on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of the 2011 revolution and of Police Day.
