The French Institute in Cairo's yearly Fête de la Musique will be held in Alexandria on 19 June and at Cairo's Al-Azhar Park on 20 June.

Fête de la Musique, a large music festival, was launched in 1982 by the French culture ministry and has since expanded internationally to 120 countries, being held annually.

The festival brings together jazz, rock, hip hop, and pop music artists to celebrate what has now become known as World Music Day.

This year in Egypt the festival will honour Rachid Taha, the late Algerian musician known for his bold experimentation with Rai music.

In Alexandria, the concert will be opened by Egyptian duo Azmy Magdy and Muhammed Nabil. Their music brings together Magdy's violin with Nabil's percussion, synthesising classical and pop/African music.

The day will then feature performances by Egyptian band El-Dor El Awal, followed by Algerian musician Sofiane Saidi and Mazalda.

In Cairo these musicians will also perform, in addition to Egyptian band Mazaher Ensemble, accompanied by Amin Shahin on arghoul and Walid Abdo on tambura and percussion, and the Egyptian DJ El-Kontessa.
