Deputy Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in charge of Water, Environment and Blue Economy Miguel García said on Wednesday that Egypt is keen on cooperating with other Mediterranean countries in many fields.

Speaking to MENA on the fringes of the UfM regional dialogue, which kicked off earlier in the day in Barcelona, Spain, García hailed Egypt's constant willingness to cooperate with UfM countries to serve the interests of their peoples.

Egypt plays a major role in promoting Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, García said.

He stressed that the appointment of Ambassador Nasser Ahmed Kamel as UfM Secretary-General came in recognition of Egypt's effective role in the region.

Highlighting the importance of an investment forum Egypt will host on 18 June, García shed light on several aspects of mutual cooperation, including water, energy and education, as well as youth and women empowerment.

The UfM regional dialogue kicked off at the union's headquarters in Spain under the theme: "Shared views on key issues in the Mediterranean.”

The gathering comes in preparation for the "Summit of the two shores," which will be organised on 23-24 June in Marseille upon the initiative of President of France Emmanuel Macron.
