The Moroccan film Adam held its Middle Eastern premiere on Sunday at the El Gouna Film Festival, which takes place this year from 19 to 27 September.
The premiere was attended by the cast and crew: director Maryam Touzani, producer Nail Ayouch, and actress Nissrine Erradi, who had just received an Ethnically Diverse Artists Foundation (EDA) award from Aladdin star and EDA founder Mena Massoud at the festival’s opening ceremony.
Set in Casablanca, the film tells the story of Abla (Lubna Azabal), a widow living with her eight-year-old daughter Warda, who is named after the great Algerian singer Warda.
Abla owns a small bakery attached to her house, and one day, to her surprise, a young, unwed pregnant woman knocks on her door asking for a job. After initially sending her away, she relents and takes in Samia (Nissrine Erradi).
The film tackles the sensitive issue of unwed mothers in the Arab world through a delicate drama featuring two women, both of whom are facing challenges.
Touzani’s debut feature, the film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and was screened at the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes this year.
It is currently participating in El Gouna Film Festival’s Feature Narrative Competition.
