In a letter to delegates at the 2019 World Radiocommunication Conference in Egypt, US President Donald Trump said that the United States plans to cooperate with "like-minded nations" to promote security in next-generation 5G networks.

Trump said the US intended "to deploy 5G services rapidly" and was "in opposition to those who would use 5G as a tool to expand control of their own citizens and to sow discord among nations."

The US has been pressing nations not to grant China's Huawei permission to launch 5G networks.

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi opened on Monday the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) in Sharm El-Sheikh, which is scheduled to last until 22 November.

The conference, which is organised by the UN agency of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), is being held for the first time in 20 years outside the ITU headquarters in Geneva.
