In its 12th edition this year, the Panorama of the European Film will introduce a new section named 'Here and There: Films in Motion.'

Scheduled to take place between 6 and 16 November, the Panorama will screen 75 films from 30 countries.

The new section is dedicated to non-European films that have nevertheless created an impact within the continent and in its festivals.

Five films will be screened within this section: Bacurau (Brazil-France), Give Me Liberty (USA), Parasite (South Korea), Talking About Trees (France, Sudan, Germany, Chad, Qatar), The Cordillera of Dreams (Chile, France).

Bacurau, the winner of the jury award at the Cannes Film Festival 2019, is directed by Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonça Filho.

The film takes us to the historical events of a Brazilian village Canudos (Brazilian state of Bahia), which at the end of the 19th century fell prey to a vicious conflict between the local authorities and the Brazilian republican regime. The conflict led to the death of a majority of Canudos's inhabitants and the village's annihilation.

Directed by Kirill Mikhanovsky, the USA comedy Give Me Liberty presents a medical transport driver Vic (Chris Galust) who risks his job to transport a group of elderly Russians to a funeral. A series of unexpected events turn the journey from bad to worse.  

South Korean film Parasite is the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2019. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the film sheds light on social hierarchy based on economic status. We follow the impoverished Park Family, whose sons manage to find their way to the rich Kim family by providing them with tutoring services. Not only does the film stress on social differences but also portrays how each individual finds himself in a reality that is very different to his own.

Suhaib Gasmelbari's debut film Talking About Trees (Sudan) has already earned large international recognition, including the Special Prize of the Jury at the Istanbul International Film Festival, the Glasshütte Original Documentary Award at the Panorama Audience Award at the 69th Berlinale, and most recently Golden Star for Best Documentary at El-Gouna Film Festival (September 2019). The film reunites four Sudanese filmmaking friends in a restless attempt to revive their old dream of bringing back a cinema hall in Sudan.

Acclaimed Chilean director Patricio Guzmán finishes his geographic trilogy about his home country with The Cordillera of Dreams (2019) ode to the Andes, a majestic crossing point for him and many others. "In this eclectic film essay, the cordillera is a crossing point for discussion. Guzmán meets with artists who take many things from the mountains: materials for sculptors, imagery for painters, inspiration for writers," reads the film's official brief.

Five films will be screened within the Here and There: Films in Motion section of the 12th Panorama of the European Film. Other sections in the Panorama programming are: Main Narrative Features, Emerging Directors, Documentaries, Carte Blanch, Children and Family section, Special Screenings and an Agnes Varda retrospective taking place this year.
