In celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Embassy of India in Cairo organised the unveiling ceremony of the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at Al-Horreya Garden, Zamalek.
On 6 November, the bronze bust of Gandhi, sculpted by renowned Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, was unveiled by Hardeep Singh Puri, the minister of state for civil aviation, housing and urban affairs and minister of state for commerce and industry, in the presence of General Mohamed Sultan, deputy governor of Cairo, Ambassador of India to Egypt Rahul Kulshresth, Ambassador Mohamed Hegazy, president of the Egyptian Indian-Friendship Association, together with dignitaries and members of the Indian community in Egypt.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Puri stressed the timeless relevance of the ideals and messages of Gandhi across the world.
Earlier during the day, Egypt's Post Authority organised the release of a commemorative stamp on Gandhi. The commemorative stamp was jointly released by Minister Puri, Essam El-Sagheer, Egypt's Post Authority chairman, and Indian Ambassador Kulshresth.
This was followed by opening a photo exhibition organised by the Indian Embassy depicting the life of Gandhi, at Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo.
The events were held on the sidelines of India-West Asia and North Africa regional conclave, which was attended by leading businessmen from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, and South Sudan.
