Syrian ground forces launched an attack on the rebel district of Baba Amr in Homs overnight and are flushing out the final pockets of resistance, a security source told AFP on Wednesday.
"The area is under control. The army has started combing the area building by building and house by house. Now the troops are searching every basement and tunnel for arms and terrorists," the source said, requesting anonymity.
"There remain only few pockets" of resistance, the source added.
On Wednesday, elite troops, backed by tanks, had massed around the protest city, and activists expressed fears of an imminent attack on the quarter held by rebels from the Free Syrian Army.
