Opposition MPs blocked the new Maldivian president from opening parliament on Thursday, reports said, three weeks after he was propelled to power amid accusations of a military-backed coup.
The Haveeru news service said opposition lawmakers grabbed the Speaker's chair and prevented President Mohamed Waheed from addressing the assembly in the capital Male.
"The Speaker of Parliament is meeting with the leaders of the parliamentary groups to resolve the crisis," the agency reported.
Witnesses said police clashed with opposition protesters gathered outside the parliament building.
