The Arab League has stressed its rejection of any forms of foreign interference in Libya, expressing its concerns about military escalation in the conflict-ridden country.

In a closing statement following an extraordinary meeting in Cairo on Tuesday, the Arab League affirmed the necessity of the prevention of any foreign interference, which would contribute to facilitating the movement of extremist foreign terrorists and fighters into Libya.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Libya and its territorial integrity, stressing supporting the political process through a full implementation of the 2015 Libyan Political Agreement as the only reference for reconciliation in Libya, with the importance of engaging neighbouring countries in international efforts aiming to help Libyans reach a settlement.

The extraordinary meeting, which came at the request of Egypt, comes as tensions continue to mount in the Mediterranean following controversial accords signed between Ankara and Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj.

Egypt has reiterated its firm support of the eastern-based Libyan National Army and its commander Khalifa Haftar, stressing its rejection of "any form of intervention in Libya’s domestic affairs."

It has held high-level talks with US and European allies, including Greece and Cyprus, to reject any form of foreign intervention in Libya.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government on Monday asked the parliament for a one-year mandate to send troops to Libya. The motion says that Al-Sarraj’s government has requested Turkish support.

The Arab League in the statement expressed its grave concerns about military escalation which exacerbates the situation in Libya and threatens the security and stability of neighbouring countries and the region as a whole, including the Mediterranean.

"We affirm the necessity of stopping military conflict, with political settlement being the only solution to restore peace and security in Libya and eliminate terrorism," it said

It also stressed the gravity of violating the letter and spirit of the Libyan political agreement and international resolutions, saying that such a violation allows for foreign military interventions.

It has urged the Arab League's secretary general to make contacts at highest levels with all international parties competent in the Libyan crisis, including the UN secretary general, to derive positive and coordinated stances targeting resolving the crisis.
