The Wadi Al-Natroun monasteries – St Pishoy, Paromeos, St Macarius, and Al-Suryan – are among the 25 stops on the Holy Family's Trail in Egypt
In an attempt to put the four monasteries of Wadi Al-Natroun on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a scientific, archaeological and technical committee is preparing a submission file to register the site with UNESCO, with a February 2020 deadline for submission to the World Heritage Committee.
The file is being compiled in cooperation with two international experts in the field who are currently visiting Egypt.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Enany met with one of these experts, Katri Listzin, who is an expert on world heritage site management and a member of UNESCO’s ICROM committee in Sharjah. The two discussed the work plan to provide technical support to complete the application file.
The Wadi Al-Natroun monasteries – St Pishoy, Paromeos, St Macarius, and Al-Suryan – are among the 25 stops on the Holy Family's Trail in Egypt.
The monasteries have similar designs and are surrounded by a high fortified wall that encloses several churches, living quarters and a qasr (keep).
