The Egyptian government and people demonstrated their strong ability in dealing with the weather disturbances that swept the country this weekend, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Friday.

The state's executive and security bodies have managed a very complicated situation during unprecedented climatic conditions, he said, adding that "all thanks goes to officials and individuals … required to monitor the situation and contain its consequences on the ground."

The president also praised "Egyptians' high spirit of cooperation and connectedness.”

"This clearly says we are together…hand in hand…stronger than anything," he added.

He also expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the unstable weather, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Stormy winds, thunder and lighting, and torrential rainfall hit the country on Thursday, causing major flooding and other disruptions.

The bad weather killed 20 people, delayed flights and forced the closure of major highways.

Conditions began to improve on Friday and are expected to clear on Saturday.
