Egypt’s general prosecution said on Saturday that spreading fake news and rumours about coronavirus will subject defendants to jail sentences and fines up to EGP 20,000. 

According to the statement issued on Saturday, those who intentionally spread rumours about the novel coronavirus may be imprisoned for five years and fined EGP 20,000 in accordance with the law.

The statement added that legal action will be taken in conformity with articles 80, 102, and 188 of the criminal law.

The prosecution further added that the punishment aims at standing up to rumour-mongers, who seek to disturb public order and stir up panic among the people.

The statement called on citizens to verify the authenticity of news published on social media platforms.
