Tunisian left back Ali Maaloul says he wants to end his football career with Egypt's Ahly, revealing that he refused a lucrative offer from a European club last summer to remain with the Cairo giants.

"Every season I receive one or two offers in every transfer market window," Maaloul revealed in an interview with Ahly's TV channel early on Saturday.

"The biggest offer ever was last summer, but Ahly officials asked me to stay and my decision was to stay out of respect for my contract and for Ahly fans," he added.

Earlier in February, Ahly ended speculation surrounding the future of Maaloul by extending his contract for three years.

The 30-year-old's deal was due to expire at the end of next season.

Maaloul has been one of Ahly's key players since joining from Tunisia's Sfaxien in the summer of 2016.

He has helped the club win the Egyptian Premier League twice and the Egypt Cup once.

"I consulted coach Nabil Maaloul during his stint as Tunisia coach about a European offer and he advised me to stay with Ahly, a top-class club," the Ahly defender explained.

"I will play here until the last day of my contract. I hope that I end my career with Ahly," he concluded.

The Tunisian international is known for his forays down the flank and inviting crosses.

He scored five goals and provided seven assists in 20 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Maaloul was Ahly's hero in the suspended edition of the African Champions League quarterfinal after scoring two goals and helping in scoring the third in the first leg match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Ahly defeated the South African team 3-1 in aggregate to reach the semifinal and they were supposed to meet Morocco's Wydad Athletic before the coronavirus crisis took place.

Ahead of the current football activities' suspension in Egypt due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, champions Ahly were leading the Egyptian Premier League table with 49 points from 17 matches.
