Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics revealed on Sunday, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, that 17.3 percent of people above the age of 15 in the country are smokers.
According to CAPMAS, the 17.3 percent represents 11.1 million people according to the population census in 2018.
CAPMAS added that 34.2 percent of males in Egypt are smokers, while only 0.2 percent of females are smokers.
In a statement released on Sunday, CAPMAS added that nearly 30 million people are negative smokers, comprising 17.9 million people in countryside and 12.2 million people in cities because they have one or more smokers in the family.
The 45 to 54-year-old age category has the highest percentage of smokers in Egypt at 22.5 percent, followed by the 35 to 44-year-old age group at 22 percent, and then the 25 to 34-year-old group at 20 percent.
“Those are considered high percentages, as all those age categories are considered young,” CAPMAS said in its statement.
The highest percentage of smokers is recorded among those with a literacy certificate at 28 percent, while the lowest percentage of smokers is among university graduates at 13.2 percent.
CAPMAS also revealed that families with one or more smokers spend EGP 5,798 on smoking annually on average.
