Ahly's first-choice keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2025, the Cairo giants announced on Tuesday.

The previous deal of El-Shennawy, who joined Ahly from Petrojet in July 2016, was set to expire in the summer of 2022.

The 31-year-old has been Ahly's regular shot-stopper since 2018 when he made the most of a series of costly errors committed by Sherif Ekramy to overtake him. Ekramy, another veteran, will depart Ahly at the end of this season.

El-Shennawi's fine form also made him Egypt's first-choice keeper as he appeared with the Pharaohs at the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ahly have also announced that they tied their veteran defender Saad Samir down to a new three-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2026.

Samir, 31, has been out of action for around a year after sustaining a serious Achilles tendon injury last year.

"The deal extensions are part of Ahly's plan to keep the team's stars and ensure the stability of the team," the club said.
